District Technology
Dear Gr 7 & 8 Parents / Guardians, Yesterday students were introduced to the exciting district pilot entitled BYOT (Bring Your Own Technology). This enables students to utilize their own technology in school, with parent permission. There are restrictions that are put into place in order to monitor student use of said technology and its use will be at the discretion of the teacher. In no way are students forced to bring in their own technology, as this is a family decision. Should a child not have a mobile device, they will be permitted to use the school’s technology. The idea is that by allowing students to utilize their own devices, we will have more technology enhancing education at the same time, replacing the current practice of technology only being used in the school computer labs. We believe that currently, the seventh and eighth graders have proven to be technologically responsible and will embrace this endeavor. Students will be given an access code for our wi-fi once they have a signed permission form. One permission form must be submitted per device to the Library Media Center. Upon receipt of the permission form(s), the student will be given a unique bar code for each device that serves as an indicator to staff that the device is permitted for use in school. If the device does not have a bar code, then it will be confiscated and a parent will be asked to pick it up from the Main Office, as we do with cell phones now. Acceptable devices for Grade 7 & 8 students include: e-z readers (Kindle, Nook), laptops, netbooks, i-pads, i-pods. It does not include cell phones at this time. Students’ use of technology must be in accordance with the district Acceptable Use Policy and with teacher permission. If you have any questions, please visit the Technology Tab on the district homepage for copies of the permission form, Acceptable Use Policy, and a Parent FAQ Sheet. We anticipate going live with the wi-fi in the Gr 7 & 8 wings on Monday, April 9, 2012. Students may bring in their devices and permission forms to the Library Media Center for registration this week. Thank you for your support as we continue to embrace the ever-changing technology world! Sincerely, Mrs. Gibbons Principal
